MN DIY Backyard Wedding | Jane & Ryan

Minnesota Backyard Wedding

A Fun DIY Wedding for the Laid back Couple

Jane and Ryan’s summer wedding was special in it’s improvised flourishes, turning an Air BNB into a scenic summer backyard wedding.   Located alongside the Mississippi River, the rented house which served as the hotspot for their wedding festivities had all the appealing aspects of a fun summer getaway in the Midwest.  For those brides who just want a casual vibe for their DIY wedding day, renting out an Air BNB is a fantastic idea.

Water Looks Great in Wedding Photos

I try to take advantage of the elements when shooting a wedding.  Water is especially conducive to the airy qualities that match the light mood of a wedding collection.  In the case of this backyard wedding, I was able to feature the water as a tremendous backdrop.  It really made Jane and Ryan stand out and gave the images a perfect softness.

  DIY Ribbon Elements

This was a nice touch.  There was this soft, flowing ribbon attached to the floral arrangements.  When setting up the details shots, this helped me give a flowing element to the photos.  Flow and movement are aspects I like to emphasize on a wedding day.

Having Fun with the Bridal Party Photos

For the Bridal Party portraits, I strayed from convention a bit.  For an unconventional group, having fun was the way to go!  I can’t quite remember how we got these awesome shots below.  I think I set everyone up, expecting to take a standard portrait.  When I quickly realized that this was a group of actors and a standard portrait would be a bit too tame, I just encouraged them to goof off and have fun.  There was some sort of in-joke happening with the vaping, but no matter: we got some great, fun, raucous shots here.

Backyard Wedding Ceremony

The weather and atmosphere couldn’t have been better for Jane & Ryan’s backyard wedding ceremony.  I loved how they set up the chairs beneath the boughs of that large, wonderful tree.  The warm summer haze across the Mississippi River also added to the ambience.

After Cocktail Hour, Before Reception

Jane and Ryan encouraged me to get creative with my set-ups for the afternoon bride and groom photos.  This led me to the set-up you see below, a bed of flowers.   It was fun, and a little different.  I also liked working with the water as a backdrop for some of the other shots.
